Heather Probert, LL.B
Senior Patent Agent / Lawyer / Trade-mark Agent
From 1974, she operated a legal publishing services business, providing legal writing, editorial, indexing, translating and related services for legal and general publishers and others. From 1979 to 1981 she practised with an IP boutique firm in Toronto, and thereafter provided contract services to IP firms in drafting Canadian Patent applications. In 2000, she returned to full time practice, joining Shapiro Cohen as a registered patent and trade-mark agent, barrister and solicitor and notary public, and practising all aspects of trade marks and related legal issues, while developing her patent agency practice. Since 2003, she has focused her practice primarily on patent agency, including drafting and prosecution of Canadian and international patent and design applications, advising on legal issues, providing opinions on infringement, validity, patentability and related mattes, drafting legal documents relating to IP, and advising the firm's clients on portfolio management and business strategies in the exploitation of IP.
Heather is part of the Joint Liaison Committee (Patents) and Joint Legislation Committee (Patent) of Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC).
