Heather Probert graduated from London University (LL.B.) and Queen's University (LL.B.) and was called to the Bar in England and Ontario. She obtained an honours certificate in mechanical technology from Ryerson in Toronto, and has been a registered trade mark agent since 1979, and a registered patent agent since 1985, practising in intellectual property until 1989, and subsequently as a consultant.

Since 1974, she has operated a legal publishing services business, providing legal writing, editorial, indexing, translating and related services for legal and general publishers and others. In 2000, she returned to full time practice with the firm as a patent and trade mark agent, and as a barrister and solicitor. She is a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada.
