Helen McLachlen, was called to the Bar of Ontario and registered as a Trade-mark Agent in 1987. Helen has worked exclusively in the field of intellectual property since. She is a graduate of Algonquin College and Kemptville Agricultural College. Helen is also a graduate of Carleton University with a High Honours Bachelor of Arts and of the University of Ottawa with a Bachelor of Laws. Prior to her legal career, Helen taught in Southern Africa and worked as an assistant to two members of parliament and a federal cabinet minister.

She is a Fellow of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada and serves as Chair of the Trade-mark Examination Review. Helen chaired the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee and the Trade-marks Examination Board for several years. She is a member of the Privilege and Self-management Committee.

Helen is a member of the International Trademark Association and served on the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee for two years. She is a Member of the Canadian Bar Association and is past chair of the Continuing Legal Education Committee of the Intellectual Property National Section and a member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee of the Ontario Section of the CBA. Helen is a member of the American Bar Association including the Science and Technology, Intellectual Property and Alternative Dispute Resolution sections of that Association. Helen is the chair of the Ottawa Chapter of the Women's Law Association of Ontario and has served in this position for several years. In the Fall of 2006 Helen began teaching intellectual property law as a part-time professor at Algonquin College.
